FAQ’s: Dermatology Conditions & Concerns

  • What can I do about acne?

Treatment for acne depends on its type and cause. We are happy to recommend the best personal approach, which may involve prescription medication, lifestyle adjustments, or procedures.

  • What is the best way to prevent skin cancer?

Key preventative measures to prevent or minimize the risk of skin cancer include limiting sun exposure, using broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding tanning beds. Regular self-exams and professional checks are also crucial for early detection.

Please talk to us to schedule a screening.

  • How can I tell if a skin growth is dangerous?

Pay attention to the ABCDEs of melanoma: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter (over 6mm), and Evolving (changing). Any suspicious growths or sores that don't heal should be evaluated.

Please reach out to us so we can schedule your skin exam.

  • How do you treat dry, itchy skin?

Applying moisturizer after bathing while the skin is still damp can help treat dry, itchy skin. We can suggest suitable moisturizers and discuss underlying causes or additional treatments if needed.

  • What are the best treatments for rosacea?

Rosacea can’t be cured, but it can be managed very effectively. The best treatment depends on your type and triggers. Options may include prescription creams or oral medications to reduce redness and bumps, laser or light therapies to target visible blood vessels, and a customized skincare routine with gentle, non-irritating products.

We’ll create a personalized plan to calm flare-ups and help you feel more confident in your skin.

  • What can be done for sun-damaged skin?

Daily sun protection is the first step, paired with medical-grade skincare to repair and protect your skin. Treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, or laser therapy can reduce discoloration and smooth texture, while injectables may help soften lines. Together, we can plan and recommend the right combination for your skin type and goals so you can restore a healthier, more youthful look.

  • What causes moles?

Moles are common skin growths that occur when pigment-producing cells (called melanocytes) grow in clusters instead of spreading evenly across the skin. Most people develop moles during childhood and adolescence, and genetics play a big role in how many you have. Sun exposure can also cause moles to appear or change over time.

While most moles are harmless, it’s important to have them checked regularly — especially if you notice changes in size, color, or shape. At Decatur Dermatology & Aesthetics, we provide thorough skin exams to keep your skin healthy and safe.

  • When should a mole be checked by a dermatologist?

You should have any mole examined if you notice changes in its size, shape, or color, or if it looks different from your other moles (see here). Warning signs include irregular or blurry borders, multiple colors, rapid growth, itching, or bleeding. Dermatologists often use the “ABCDE” rule — Asymmetry, Border, Color, Diameter, and Evolving — to spot suspicious moles. Even if you’re unsure, it’s always better to be safe and schedule a skin check.

At Decatur Dermatology & Aesthetics, we perform full-body exams to detect early signs of skin cancer and give you peace of mind.

  • Are there ways to reduce wrinkles and age spots?

Various options, including retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, and cosmetic treatments, can help improve skin texture and reduce signs of aging.

We offer a broad range of Aesthetic Treatments to address wrinkles and age spots, so you can feel your best in your own skin.

Reach out and let’s plan together.

Yes, diet can impact skin health, and we can discuss its role in various conditions.

FAQ’s: Billing & Insurance

  • What insurance plans do you accept?

Decatur Dermatology & Aesthetics participates with many major health insurance plans, including Medicare. We do not currently accept Medicaid.

Because individual plans and provider networks can vary, we recommend confirming that Dr. Kelli Baender and Decatur Dermatology & Aesthetics are in-network with your specific plan before your appointment.

If you're unsure whether we accept your insurance, please contact our office. We'll be happy to help you identify whether we participate with your plan.

  • Will my insurance cover my visit?

Most health insurance plans cover medically necessary dermatology services, subject to your plan's benefits, deductible, copayments, and coinsurance.

However, coverage depends on your specific insurance plan and the services provided. We recommend contacting your insurance company if you have questions about your benefits or expected out-of-pocket costs.

Cosmetic treatments are generally not covered by health insurance.

  • What is the difference between a copay, deductible, coinsurance, and out-of-pocket maximum?

These terms describe how you share the cost of medical care with your insurance company.

    • Copay: A fixed amount you pay for a covered service, such as $40 for a specialist visit.

    • Deductible: The amount you must pay for covered services before your insurance begins paying certain benefits.

    • Coinsurance: The percentage of covered costs you're responsible for, such as 20%, after any applicable deductible.

    • Out-of-pocket maximum: The most you pay for covered, in-network services during your plan year through deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. Once you reach this limit, your insurance generally pays 100% of covered, in-network costs for the remainder of the plan year.

Depending on your plan, more than one of these may apply to your visit.

  • Why did I receive a bill after paying my copay?

Your copay may not cover everything performed during your visit.

We submit claims for covered medical services to your insurance company first. Your insurer then processes the claim, applies any contractual adjustments, and determines how much it will pay and what portion is your responsibility. Any copay collected at your visit is credited toward that responsibility.

Once your insurance has processed the claim, any remaining balance—including applicable deductibles or coinsurance, less payments you've already made—will be reflected on your statement.

  • Why did I receive a separate bill from a laboratory?

If a skin biopsy or another specimen is sent to an outside laboratory, the laboratory may bill separately for its services.

These charges are independent of the services provided by Decatur Dermatology & Aesthetics and may be subject to your insurance plan's deductible, copayments, or coinsurance.

If you receive a laboratory bill, please contact the laboratory listed on the statement with questions about those charges.

  • Can I pay out of pocket instead of using my insurance?

We offer self-pay options for patients who do not have insurance or for services that are not covered by insurance.

If we participate in your insurance network, your plan and our contractual obligations may require us to submit covered medical services to your insurance company.

Please contact our office before your appointment if you have questions about self-pay arrangements.

  • Does insurance cover aesthetic or cosmetic treatments?

Generally, no. Elective aesthetic treatments such as Dysport, Sculptra, and other cosmetic services are typically not covered by health insurance.

We will explain applicable consultation fees and treatment costs before proceeding, so you can make an informed decision.

  • Who can help me with a billing question?

Our billing team can assist with questions about statements, insurance claims, payments, and outstanding balances.
